Spain is a  very vibrant country with different cultures, traditional historic sites, White hill towns, and many more. Since accessibility is a little challenging, We did a road trip in Spain which makes it easy for a wheelchair user to cover different places. Even though we stayed in the big cities like Madrid and Barcelona. But I found it very charming driving through the little towns.

Toledo and Segovia are the most picturesque town in Spain. Due to very rough terrain and cobblestone, it is very hard to navigate those roads. I will be mentioning the places from where it’s easy for mobility challenged person to get a glimpse of the city from your car.

Toledo

Toledo is a beautiful Medieval town in Spain that is also declared a national monument. The city is very hilly and the roads are steep. The historic center is very difficult for wheelchair users as it is made of cobblestone. Most streets in Toledo are very narrow and steep. So it’s better for a  wheelchair user to drive around to see the city from across the river. Drive to Mirador del Valle which is an elevated spot and from there you can get a spectacular view of the medieval town. There is parking which normally is not very crowded. There are elevators at Paseo de Recaredo, which will drop you off near the Zocodover Plaza. Some elevators are accessible from car parking. There are escalators too but might be difficult for a wheelchair user.

♿️Wheelchair accessibility♿️

  • ♿️ Parking is a bit difficult. If you take a map from the tourism office it has all the accessible parking spots described there.
  • Paseo De Recardo has elevators
  • The tourism office has a Map that describes all the wheelchair accessible parking spaces

Segovia

Segovia is in the center of Spain and is very famous for its Roman Aqueduct. This city is also declared as a UNESCO Heritage. Segovia consists of many cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways which makes it very difficult for a wheelchair user to navigate. So it is best to drive around. It is a very easy day trip from Madrid. The aqueduct of Segovia’s is the biggest attraction. Running through the heart of the city, the Roman stone structure is very impressive. Plaza Azuguego is the most popular place to view the aqueduct. At this place, the height of the aqueduct is very high. There is underground parking right there where there are some wheelchair parking spots. You can park in the underground parking structure and take the elevator that will take you right in front of the aqueduct. You can pretty much get the best view from there. The area around Plaza Azuguego is a spacious place with lots of wheelchair-accessible outdoor restaurant seating.

Segovia is surrounded by walls. Exploring those walls is a very common activity there. It is recommended to drive around the walled city as there is cobblestone everywhere. By driving you also get a better view. The area between Segovia Museum and Alcazar is the place with better look-out points.
