Beautiful sunny weather always brightens up your day. The months of April and May are just perfect with the glow and fragrance all around us. Nature is covered with multi-colored wildflowers and fresh green leaves. There are many well-known flower fields around the world that bloom around this time of the year. Even our little backyard seems to have woken up and dressed itself with daffodils, tulips, and roses.

It has been a tradition in our family to visit a flower field during the spring season. Some of the best-known ones that we have visited in the last few years are:

  • Wooden Shoe at Woodburn, Oregon
  • Carlsbad near San Diego, California
  • Lompoc near Santa Barbara, California
  • Carrizo Plain near San Luis Obispo, California
  • Pacific Coast ( Monterey Peninsula), California
  • Poppy Fields at Antelope Valley, California

 Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm

We visited the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in the Spring of 2019.  We were on a road trip to Portland, Oregon.  During that trip, we visited the Multnomah Falls and Oregon Shakespeare festival amongst other places. But it was the Tulip fields that were the most charming and memorable. The wooden shoe is a 40-acre farm carpeted with multi-colored tulips, daffodils, and other perennials. It is visually mesmerizing.  This place is 35 minute drive from Salem in a town called Woodburn.

The entrance to the farm welcomes you with a flower shop, rides for children, photo booths, and many eatery carts. The flower shop will get you the rarest tulip bulbs. We got the orange ones for our home. As you walk further inside you are treated to a visual spectacle. You have unending bands of colorful flowers almost reaching the horizon. As you walk between the bands of flowers, you will realize the generous space left between the bands for visitors to walk and enjoy the visual treat. Every few yards there are benches in case you want to sit and take pictures or just immerse yourself in the amazing sea of colors. There is a windmill at the back of the farm, which tends to provide you the feel of the Netherlands, the original home of Tulips. We took some family pictures with Mount Hood, Vineyards, and the flower fields in the backdrop.

The entrance to the farm is very uneven and the parking is on a graveled road.  It is not very accessible when wet. On a dry day, a wheelchair or a scooter will be just fine. However, on a wet day, it is better to park on the grassy field next to the graveled road. You can also drive along the border of the farm to go further back where the parking is on firmer ground. Irrespective of the weather you can use your wheelchair or scooter when you are parked here.

Tips

  1. Check the bloom time and status of the bloom when you plan to visit.
  2. Check the weather conditions before you make the trip.
